Eyeglasses Q & A

How does an eyeglasses exam work?

At Ypsilanti Vision, the skilled team of optometrists offers comprehensive eyeglasses exams that evaluate your eye health and vision. They perform a variety of tests, such as eye pressure measurement to screen for glaucoma, to check eye health. They also perform a visual acuity test.

In a visual acuity test, your optometrist checks each eye individually. You’ll read eye charts with one eye covered to get an accurate vision assessment. If your visual acuity test shows that you need glasses, you’ll also have a refraction exam.

In the refraction exam, you’ll test a variety of different glasses lenses to determine the right prescription. You’ll look at an eye chart while your eye doctor switches lenses out and asks which one gives you better eyesight.

After your refractive exam, your optometrist gives you a new prescription. Then, you can visit the onsite optical lab to choose your new eyeglasses.

How often do I need to replace my eyeglasses?

The American Optometric Association recommends having annual comprehensive eye exams, even for children and adults who don’t require vision correction. Bring your current eyeglasses to your eye exam so the team at Ypsilanti Vision can check them.

You’ll typically wear your current glasses for part of the exam and then remove them so your optometrist can look for any changes in your eye health or vision. If you don’t require a new prescription, you may not need a new pair of glasses.

Many patients enjoy updating their glasses frames once a year. The Ypsilanti Vision team can recommend the perfect glasses replacement schedule for your needs.
